At Her Table Way: Growing confidence to gather and lead

An update from Co-Directors Lauren Harkness and Kylie Malcolm

A meaningful conversation can begin in an ordinary place: around a kitchen table, over coffee or while walking together. These moments can offer space for women to share honestly, explore faith and feel more deeply connected.

Through At Her Table, we have met women who want to create these opportunities in their own communities. Some have an idea for a gathering. Others are already leading and would value fresh encouragement. Many simply want to feel more comfortable talking about faith with the people in their everyday lives.

At Her Table Way has been developed with these women in mind.

Learning at your own pace

At Her Table Way is a self-paced online course, open to women across all Christian denominations. It brings together practical teaching and personal reflection to help women lead with confidence, host meaningful conversations and nurture communities rooted in faith.

The course explores leadership, handling tension, storytelling, community and setting the table. These themes help participants consider how they listen, welcome others, respond to differences and create opportunities for honest conversation.

Our hope is that women will recognise the gifts they already bring and develop practical ways to use them. Leadership can begin with noticing someone, asking a thoughtful question or making room for a story to be heard.

From an idea to a gathering

Deirdre Herrmann’s experience offers a glimpse of what this can look like.

Through her work with Art for Heart and Mind, Deirdre wanted to bring people together through creativity. She had an idea for an online art gathering but was looking for the confidence and structure to begin.

Completing At Her Table Way and undertaking host training helped her develop Chat and Draw, a monthly online gathering combining drawing, conversation and reflection. It creates space for participants to slow down, share their thoughts and connect through a creative practice.

We love seeing women shape gatherings around their own gifts and the needs of the people they hope to welcome. For one woman, that might involve art. For another, it could be a walking group, a Bible study or a few friends sharing a meal.

Faith and hospitality in everyday life

Small, local gatherings can become micro faith communities: places where relationships deepen, everyday life is shared and faith is explored together. At Her Table Way supports women who want to nurture these communities, while also offering tools for the conversations that happen naturally with friends, family and neighbours.

We are also exploring future opportunities for mentoring and a community of practice. These are still being developed; the course currently offers a self-paced learning experience.

We look forward to seeing how women use their gifts to nurture connection, conversation and faith in the places they call home.
